Since
1879 people in New England and the northeastern United States have relied
on Davis Baking Powder.
At the time of its
introduction, Davis Baking Powder was one of literally scores of baking
powder brands available throughout the country. Most of these brands have
long since died, leaving only a handful of national brands still in existence.
Most baking powder brands have very strong regional followings. Traditionally
Davis brand has been the baking powder of choice in the Northeast. In
New York, Davis outsells its nearest competitor four-to-one and outsells
all other brands combined by two-to-one. There Davis accounts for 7 out
of 10 cans sold!
History
of the Davis Brand
The R.B. Davis Company of Hoboken, New Jersey first
registered a trademark for Davis Baking Powder on July 1, 1886. In 1958
R.B. Davis merged with Penick & Ford, Ltd. of New York, New York,
makers of specialty chemical products for use in the paper, food, and
textile industries. Penick & Ford sold Davis Baking Powder to R.J.
Reynolds Foods, Inc. in 1967. RJR Foods transferred the brand to Del Monte
Corporation of San Francisco in 1981 after the two companies had merged.
Davis was subsequently transferred to Nabisco in 1987, which by that time
had been acquired by RJR Foods, bringing the Davis brand back to its former
owner. In 1999 Nabisco and RJR Foods parted ways; Davis remained with
Nabisco International. In 2001 The JelSert Co. of Chicago purchased Davis
when Kraft Foods acquired Nabisco. Finally, in 2003 Davis Baking Powder
was acquired by Clabber Girl Corporation, makers of several other baking
powder brands.
